Social Media Detox Journey Update

41 days without Instagram & Facebook

The Beginning

I wasn’t sure what to expect by quitting social media cold turkey. Initially I had withdrawal symptoms but it got easier by the day.

I have to be honest here. I did overuse WhatsApp some days but most days I did faithfully kept  opening only 3 to 5 times a day. I tracked my usage each and every day.

The Middle

When you finish 10 days of this detox you are already in the safe zone. That urge to get back will decline and you will no longer want to see what Karen eat and what Jane wore. In fact you will find yourself  planning out in your head which accounts you will want to unfollow once you are back.

I did watch YouTube a bit. In fact it was only one channel ‘Ali Abdaal’. I ended up watching most of at least 10 of his videos. He gives tips for beginners on YouTube. It was something I absolutely needed. I could relate to him more because he was also a doctor.

I wasn't feeling overwhelmed anymore.

Just scrolling randomly on Instagram had started becoming overwhelming. My mind decided it needed a break and hence this detox.

The break from social media was actually pretty liberating

I’m not bombarded with people constantly taking away my time from me. I put it towards myself and my goals.

The End Part

Ø ➡️I got all my work done faster.

Ø ➡️I read 2 books.( At the end of this post i’ll mention the names. It is by the same author and I loved it)

➡️Zero mood swings.

➡️I had a clear mind. It helped me let my creative juices flowing

➡️2 years ago I had this idea of starting a YouTube channel. But I kept procrastinating and making up all kinds of excuses. But during this detox I started working towards my very first video. I did animations for the video using PowerPoint. Yes just PowerPoint. No fancy software and tools.

➡️I officially launched the channel and published the 1st  video on June 1st and also came back to social media on the same day!

➡️I Wrote 6 blog posts  including 3 interviews within these 41 days. I got to give myself a pat in the back for that one. I usually get 6 posts done in 2 years. I really need to work on my blog more.

➡️I take out a pen and paper and made 3 columns every day.

o  7 most important things to do today

o  7 things to do this week

o  7 things to do within a month.

This method of getting things done is helping me immensely! I think you should also give it a try!

How do you I feel now that I’m back on social media?

After my 41 day break, I learned that it’s up to me to use Instagram in a healthy way.

➡️It’s about balancing what we share and consume. Ask yourself  Is this content bringing me any value?”

Ø It is mindfully seeking out the good and investing in it.

I really think our mind needs a detox like this. If you read this post and would like to try a detox like this let me know how it went in the comments below. I will be happy to know your experience as well.

P.S: The 2 books I read was “Show your Work” and “Steal like an Artist”. Both books are written by Austin Kleon.

Also  during this time we as a family was going through one of the toughest of times . My mother in law was extremely sick but now she is recovering miraculously by God's Grace. Everyday in the smallest of ways we see her improving. I'm glad to be there in Kerala at that point of time along with Rohit and Ryan because we could help out in every way possible. My father in law has been taking care of my mom in law single handedly ever since she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. The unconditional love , patience and care that he has for her is truly unique.

Name: Bittu Jacob Owner of Baked for you by Bittu   1. Why did you pursue baking as career?   During my school days I enjoyed baking with my ‘Amma’. After getting married I used to bake occasionally at home and when we had guests at home.   On my son’s 5 th   birthday, I decided to make a fire truck shaped fondant cake. It was my very first attempt baking a fondant cake from scratch. When my family saw the cake they were quite impressed. To be honest the cake tasted lovely but it was not like those very neat fondant cakes . My family encouraged me to level up my skill by attending cake décor classes.       So I attended a class and learned the basics of cake decoration. Even at that point of time I never thought of taking this up professionally. That same year (2016) in the month of December my Appa asked me to bake 10 cakes to gift his friends. I was nervous about this but my Appa had full confidence in me. He convinced...

The dot, turban and the hijab.

It was another day at middle school. I still had not made any friends. Well , the truth is I really tried but no one  wanted to be my friend. It was lunch time and I was looking for a place to sit in the cafeteria. This is one thing I dread the most. Everyone had a group of friends of their own. The popular group sat in the corner. They were the cheerleaders, basketball players, kids with good looks (most of them wore makeup so cannot really tell if they were really good looking) and then there were the rich kids who only wore only branded clothes , shoes.  I certainly did not belong there because I didn’t have the skinny body type which those cheerleaders had. Forget sports. I cannot even do ten push-ups straight. I wore clothes which I got on sale from JCpenny and not Ar...
